IS220PPROS1B is an emergency turbine protection I/O package manufactured and designed by General Electric, as part of the Mark VIe series used in General Electric’s distributed control system. The emergency turbine protection I/O module (PPRO) and related terminal boards provide a backup overspeed protection system with a backup check for synchronization between the generator and the common bus. They also serve as independent watchdog for the main controller. Three the third mock examination Redundant (TMR) PPRO I/O modules installed on separate Simplex Protection (SPRO) terminal boards constitute a typical protection system. Each SPRO is connected to a designated emergency trip board through a cable, with DC-37 pins at both ends of the cable:
TREG: Gas turbine emergency trip terminal board.
TREL: Emergency trip terminal board for large steam turbines.
TRES: Emergency trip terminal board for small and medium-sized steam turbines.
TREA: Emergency trip terminal board for steam turbine.
It is possible to use a single board TMR protection system with three PPRO I/O packages in different configurations. PPRO is connected to the control module via Ethernet for IONet communication. The main and backup trip systems controlled by Mark * VIe are integrated at the trip terminal board level. The main I/O component PTUR of the steam turbine using the main trip gate provides main protection (TRPG, TRPL, TRPS, TRPA). The PPRO I/O package runs a backup trip board to provide backup protection (TREG, TREL, Tres, TREA).
PPRO can handle three different types of speed signals, including hardware implemented overspeed, acceleration, deceleration, and basic overspeed. This package maintains focus on the main control performance and can check the main speed to ensure everything is running properly.
Through extensive feedback signals, PPRO tracks the status and function of the selected trip board. If a fault is found, PPRO will trip the backup trip relay on the trip board and initiate a trip on the main controller. The main control action is independent of packaging and completely independent of packaging.
